"Martha Elvira George was born May 23, 1839, and died Jan. 3, 1926, marking her pilgrimage on earth 86 years, 7 months and 10 days. Her maiden name was Sweetenburg. She was the daughter of William and Mollie Sweetenburg. She had three brothers, William, John and David, and five sisters Beda Addy, Margaret (?) , Jean (?) , Luvenia Chapman and Sarah Smith, all whom are dead.
She was twice married, the first time to Amos B[artley] Guise who died [in VA] during the Civil War. One daughter Mrs. Elva Summer, was born to this union.
Her second marriage was with Joel S. George, who died about a year ago. To this union there was born one son, James William George who died 35 years.
She leaves to mourn her departure her daughter, 7 grand-children and 14 great-grand-children, besides other relations and friends. 2 grand-children and 3 great-grand children have preceded her to the spirit land.
In early youth she was confirmed in the Christian faith, becoming a member of St. John's Lutheran Church. She remained a member of St. John's all her life. For many years the circumstances surrounding her life did not permit her regular attendance. Yet the writer of this can testify that she held fast to faith in her Lord and loved his word. She appreciated greatly the visits from the pastor and the services held in her home. We have good ground for our hope that when she walked down into the valley of the shadow of death she feared no evil, but could confidently lean on the rod and staff of the great Shepherd and find comfort, courage, and hope of eternal life in the heavenly Father's house.
