Mary Nell Stevenson Cherry

Mary Cherry was a sweet, devoted Christian lady loved by her 3 children, large extended family and many friends. She was born in Tennessee and spent her childhood and teen years in McMinnville, Tn.
As a young woman out of high school, she completed training at the Western Union School of Telegraphy.

She began working full time as a WU telegraph operator until she married Thomas Cherry of Rock Island, TN in 1948 and began raising her family of 2 sons and 1 daughter.

She continued working intermittently both part-time and full-time for WU until the Company internationally re-organized and modernized their operations technologically and no longer need her services.

She then began working at LM Berry, a phone book yellow pages advertising company in Nashville, Tn. After leaving that job when her husband, Tom retired from AT&T (formerly South Central Bell Telephone Co.) they returned to McMinnville, TN and began residing in Centertown, TN until they became divorced in 1986.

She resided for a short time in Portland, TN and later moved to Huntsville, Al to live with her oldest sister. The two sisters subsequently moved to Navarre, FL where her sister preceded her in death after which she spent her own final years living in Pensacola, FL with her daughter, Her hobbies were reading and working myriads of pencil puzzle challenges until her vision failed her to macular degeneration, after which she spent many hours listening to Talking Books, provided by NLS Bard, a free governmental reading service for the blind.

She was a hardworking, loving and much loved Mother, Grandmother and Aunt to many nieces and nephews, who enjoyed laughter and her 95 years of life to the fullest. She will be greatly missed. On behalf of my brothers and myself, we would like to express our gratitude to Emerald Coast Hospice and their affiliate staff for helping me to care for our mother for the final 3 weeks of her life and making her transitioning as comfortable as possible.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents: Ernest and Henrie Stevenson, three brothers: Clyde, Gene and Ernest Stevenson, and two sisters: Vivian Marrs and Edna Jordan.

Left to cherish Mary’s beautiful memorials will be her three children: Michael Cherry and wife Mary, Beverly Busbee and husband Paul, Kenneth Cherry and wife Darnell, seven grandchildren: Emily Carter and husband Troy, Arron Cherry, Jennifer Cherry, Ron Wagoner, Danielle Miller and husband Kevin, Christopher Smith and wife Jennifer, Gina Brouwer, fifteen great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, with extended family members and numerous wonderful friends.
