Prime Minister of Portugal. Politician and navy officer. José Baptista Pinheiro Azevedo was born on June 5, 1917, in Luanda, in the then Portuguese colony of Angola. He entered the Naval School on October 1, 1934, and was promoted to officer in 1937. He taught Astronomy and Navigation at the Naval School and the Captains' Course at the Infante D. Henrique Nautical School. He collaborated on technical books on trigonometry, meteorology and navigation. He was a member of the Democratic Unity Movement and supported the candidacies of José Norton de Matos, Manuel Quintão Meireles and Humberto Delgado to the presidency of Portugal. He served in the Colonial War and was in charge of the maritime defense of Angola, in which he led the maritime defense of Santo António do Zaire. From 1968 to 1971, he served as naval attaché to the Portuguese embassy in London. He was promoted to Captain in 1979, and in 1972 he became a Marines Commander. After the Revolution of April 25, 1974, he was appointed to the National Salvation Junta, and was promoted to Chief of Staff of the Navy three days later. Committed to the democratization of the country during the Ongoing Revolutionary Process (PREC), he took on the role of Prime Minister of the 6th Provisional Government from September 19, 1975 to July 23, 1976. In this role, Pinheiro Azevedo was even kidnapped in parliament and threatened by the more radical wings of the revolution. For this reason, he went so far as to suspend the government's activities with the President of the Republic Francisco da Costa Gomes, which was unprecedented for a government. He also contributed to the defeat of Vasco Gonçalves and his supporters and defended the normalization of national life. On June 23, 1976, he suffered a heart attack and was replaced on an interim basis, between June 23 and July 23, 1976, by Vasco Almeida e Costa, Minister of Internal Affairs. Pinheiro Azevedo ran for President of the Republic, without party support, in the 1976 presidential elections, coming third. A year later, he became president of the Christian Democracy Party, where he worked for the Portuguese recovery of the territory of Olivença from Spain, until his death from another heart attack on August 10, 1983. He went down in history as the "Fearless Admiral."
