Gordon C. "GORDY" VanSteenberg, 81, a resident of DeSoto for the last 21 years, passed away early Tuesday, February 23, 2021. Gordy was born July 8, 1939 in Brookville, Pennsylvania to Ira G. and Betty Helmheckel VanSteenberg. He retired from Scientific Glass Companies as National Sales Manager. During the 21 years the VanSteenberg's have lived in DeSoto, they have been integral parts of the community. Gordy served on the Tri City Animal Shelter Board, President of his Silver Creek HOA for 6 years, served on the Park and Recreation Board for De Soto, Citizens on Patrol, and the DeSoto Adopt - A - Street volunteer program, and a member of Grace Place Church of Christ. One of his largest contributions was being one of four co- founding the Best Southwest Regional CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) , the and Best Southwest Unified Citizen Corp Council He worked on the training, wrote manuals and conducted programs. Gordy logged over 7550 volunteer hours and in-kind value totaling over $200,000.00 In 2010 he was certified by the Texas Department of Emergency Management and TEEK, as a CERT Master Instructor. Gordy also enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing various musical instruments Gordy is survived by his wife of 60 years: Shirley VanSteenberg, son: Brett VanSteenberg of Billings, Montana, granddaughter: Emma Christina VanSteenberg of Bassano Del Grappa, Italy, and his brother: Lowell Thomas VanSteenberg of Morganton, NC.
The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday at West/Hurtt Funeral Home, 217 S. Hampton Rd., De Soto, TX 75115.
A Celebration of His Life will follow at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of the funeral home
