Born in Longview, Texas on September 29, 1946, and raised in Texas, “Ed,” as he was called by most, attended Texas A&M University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Zoology. Ed enlisted in the United States Navy in 1969 and attended boot camp in Orlando, Florida, and Naval Hospital Corps School in Great Lakes, IL, to become a Hospital Corpsman. He served over four years as a Hospital Corpsman, where he assisted in the health care of servicemen who had returned from Vietnam. He separated from the Navy in 1974 to attend graduate school.

Ed attended the University of Arizona, where he earned a Master of Science in Microbiology/Immunology and later received a Ph.D. in Environmental Health Science from the University of Texas School of Public Health. Ed returned to service in 1992 when he was commissioned in the U.S. Public Health Service, where he accepted a position at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Agency of Toxic Substance and Disease Registry (ATSDR). He was promoted to Captain in 2000 and retired from CDC/ATSDR in 2018 after 26 years of dedicated service.

Ed loved his family and was a dedicated father. When he was not working at CDC or teaching at local universities, he loved to stay busy with woodworking and going to the local gun range with his children. Ed enjoyed grilling outdoors and trying new recipes. He was a focused person, and when he set his mind to something, he followed through to completion. For instance, he developed an interest in Ham Radios and studied diligently to attain his license as an amateur radio operator. He has an impressive amount of equipment and commented to his family that he might like to start back up again since retiring from CDC. His handle is KB5NNN.

In his younger years, he enjoyed local game hunting and bringing it home for his mother to cook. He briefly took an interest in golf and decided he didn’t like it.

Ed is survived by his wife of 47 years, Marjorie Morrissette Murray of Snellville, GA, and their two children, Jason Edward Murray of Snellville, GA, and Jennifer Eileen Murray of Arlington, VA. He is also survived by his mother, Annie Marie Samford Murray, and sister Janet Murray Stulce and husband Ted of Palestine, TX.

The funeral service will be held at Eternal Hills Funeral Home, 3594 Stone Mountain Highway, Snellville, GA. Visitation will be Saturday, February 27, 2021, at 1:00 PM. The service will follow at 2:00 PM and will be conducted by his sister Janet Murray Stulce and his brother-in-law, who are ordained ministers.

The Burial will be held on March 2nd, 2021, at 10:30 am at the Georgia National Cemetery, 2025 Mount Carmel Church Lane, Canton, GA 30114.
