Actor. Born in Dublin, Ireland, he was an Irish character actor known for his roles on stage, film and television. He established his professional reputation as a member of the Abbey Players in Dublin and gained great notice when he won the Best Performance by an Actor Obie Award for his role in the play "Beckett" on Broadway in (1971). For feature films, his many credits include "The Quiet Man" (1952), "Tom Jones" (1963), "The Fearless Vampire Killers" (1968), "Start the Revolution Without Me" (1970) and "The Exorcist" (1973). Also a popular figure on television, he appeared on "The Avengers", "Z Cars", "BBC Play of the Month", "Banacek", "The Shadow of a Gunman" and many more. He died in New York City from influenza at age 54.
