Patricia Marie Grogan
March 4, 1927 - October 19, 2017
Patricia Marie Grogan died early Thursday morning October 19, 2017, with family at hand. It was unexpected - she'd just enjoyed her 'old lady' exercise class - and quick, just hours from the first twinges heralding her demise. She wasn't especially fearful of death; while not looking forward to it, neither did she relish the prospect of living to 100. Patricia lived 90 full years with her wit and wisdom intact. She enjoyed a lively and impish sense of humor, even to the very end. Patricia was a devoted artist and crossword puzzler, an avid reader and gardener, an inveterate political observer, and an ardent Lakers fan. And she loved her desert tortoises. Educated and mannerly, interesting and interested, full of fun and whip smart, she was a nomad at heart, a legacy of growing up in a military family. It seems fitting that she'd just moved into a new apartment - excited by the prospect of a new beginning - when the end came.
Patricia was born to Colonel Stanley J. Grogan and Marie DiGiorgio Grogan in Buffalo, New York, on March 4, 1927. No one lives the better part of a century without experiencing profound joy and crushing tragedy. Patricia received a full measure of both, including losing her husband, Edward Paul Gauthier, in a plane crash when she was just 30 years old. She raised five fine children on her own (with help from Helen, Lucille and Jeanne Gauthier!): Ed (Barbara), Jacques (Lynn), Nicole (Ken) and Marc (Joan) Gauthier, and Lise Valenzuela. Patricia is also survived by her brother, Stanley J. Grogan, and his family (Mary & Mary Maureen Grogan), as well as ten grandchildren (Terra & Adam Gauthier; Andrea Lane & Nick Gauthier; Mark & Ava Cowan; Mataeux Gauthier; Alison McGhee and Rob & Katie Valenzuela), and twelve great grandchildren (Noa, Lucca & expected-baby-girl Gauthier; Austin, Clara & Hudson Lane; Emily Pearl Cowan; Kai Valenzuela; Isabella, Cash, Wyatt & Guy McGhee). Patricia also left behind the family of her recently deceased husband Tom Adam, her 'second great love,' whom she met and married in her 70s.
Patricia will be sorely missed, but will live on in the hearts and minds of many. That's quite a legacy. Thank you, Mom.
Patricia's Celebration of Life will be held from 1:30 to 3:30pm, Friday, November 24, at Rosewood Retirement Community, 1301 New Stine Rd, Bakersfield.
