Robert Wendell Reed
SEPTEMBER 10, 1925 – FEBRUARY 21, 2021

Robert “Bob” Wendell Reed, 95, of Charlotte passed away on Feb. 21, 2021. Bob was born on September 10, 1925 in Forest City, NC. He was the son of the late Viola Mae McDaniel and Martin Robert Reed.

Bob was a graduate of Cool Springs High School. Following high school, Bob began his studies at North Carolina State College. His education was put on pause to serve his country in the United States Navy as an Electrician’s Mate on the USS Kula Gulf during World War II. Following his time in the U.S. Navy, he completed his bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. While in Raleigh, Bob met Montrose “Monty” Beam, and the two were married in 1948. Bob and Monty shared 64 years of marriage prior to her death in 2012. During their marriage, Bob and Monty had two children, Robert Russell “Rusty” Reed and Wendela “Wendy” Reed Wooten (Chuck); and two granddaughters, Rachel and Samantha Wooten. Bob worked as an Electrical Engineer for Southern Bell Telephone Company for more than 30 years. During the Vietnam War, Bob was recruited to be a civilian contractor for Westinghouse and spent 11 months in Southeast Asia to assist the Defense Communications Agency with communication problems. After his retirement from Southern Bell in the 1980’s, Bob was hired as a contractor to scout potential cell phone tower locations in North and South Carolina. Bob had many accomplishments and hobbies throughout his life. He was a NC Registered Professional Engineer, held a 1st Class Radio Telephone Operators License and a General Class Amateur Radio License. In his younger years, Bob was a Head Linesman Referee for High School Football. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, gardening and beekeeping. He will be deeply missed by those who loved him.

Bob is survived by his son, Rusty; daughter, Wendy (Chuck); and two granddaughters, Rachel and Samantha. In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Monty, and his brothers; Charles Reed and Fred Reed.

Funeral Service will take place on Wednesday, February 24, 2021 beginning at 2pm at McEwen Funeral Service, 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte. The family extends many thanks to Novant Hospice and Palliative Care at Novant Health Matthews Medical Center. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in remembrance of Mr. Reed to his church, Sardis Presbyterian Church 6100 Sardis Road Charlotte, NC 28270.
