He was born on October 30, 1934 at St. Francis Hospital in Macomb to the late Forrest Glen Henderson and Edna lcel (Hagerty) Henderson.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Mae Louise Henderson. Surviving are his wife, son and his wife, and grandson.

Virgil attended Fairmont Grammar School, Scotland Community Consolidated Grade School, and later graduated from Macomb High School in 1952. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1954 to 1958 at England Air Force Base in Alexandria, Louisiana. From a young age, he aspired to follow in his father's footsteps and become a successful farmer. After completing his military service, he returned home to farm the family homestead where he and Ramona have lived since they were married on October 16, 1966 at the First Christian Church in Macomb, Illinois. Virgil realized his dream and raised cattle, sheep, hogs, poultry, and farmed corn and soybeans. Holding to his strong interest in water and soil conservation, he served as a Secretary-Treasurer of the McDonough County Soil and Water Conservation District in the late 1960's and early 1970's.

Virgil was a member of the Macomb Chapter of the Eastern Star as well as the Quincy Consistory. He also participated in the Industry Kiwanis Club and the Macomb Lion's Club. He was a former member, elder, and deacon of the First Christian Church of Macomb and in recent years was a member of the Macomb First Baptist Church.

Virgil loved watching old westerns, especially Gunsmoke, The Lone Ranger and Hop Along Cassidy as well watching baseball with his son, Corey, (both avid Cubs fans). He enjoyed spending time with family and taking drives in the countryside.
