Jean was born at her childhood home on Yale Avenue in Salt Lake City on August 4, 1927. She was second, of three children. Her father was Lyle Elsworth Ranck and mother Sarah Abigail Mathews.
She graduated from East High School with the class of 1944. She then attended the University of Utah with classes in music.
She married Warren Thomas September 17, 1946 in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they were blessed with five children. David Warren Thomas, Peggy Ann Thomas, (married Russ Hettinger), Bonnie Thomas, (married Clark Labrum), Perry Evan Thomas, Judy Ward (Steve). She is preceded in death by her parents, two siblings, her husband Warren and son David. She leaves behind fifteen grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren.

She was always active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She led choirs, children and adults.
She also played piano for all organizations. She was a wonderful piano teacher and had as many as 30 students at a time. She taught most of her grandchildren how to play the piano. She also shared her voice by singing soprano in quartets and choirs. She volunteered as a PTA President at Nibley Park Elementary. She also headed a chapter of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. Jean and her husband Warren served a service mission for the Taylorsville Utah North Stake.

She enjoyed traveling and saw many wonderful places in the world and at home. Her parents, young family always had a trip with friends to Southern California beaches each year. Her young family also went on a two week vacation each summer in the western United States. She enjoyed Israel and Peru. The islands in the South Pacific, Australia and New Zealand, and Canada. The family would like to thank the CNA’s at Carrington Court and others that cared for her so well. We would also like to thank Canyon Hospice for their dedication and support.
