He accepted Christ at an early age and attended Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. He attended Peabody Magnet High School of Alexandria, Louisiana. He later joined the United States Army and served in Vietnam. Upon returning to the United States, he was employed at England Air Force Base, Alexandria, Louisiana.
He married Jill Houser Burns in April 1983. They relocated to Nashua, New Hampshire, where their son was born. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Nashua, New Hampshire. He retired from Hanscom Air Force Base, Bedford, Massachusetts after over 40 years of federal service. He served on the committee in Nashua, New Hampshire that was successful in the declaration of the First Martin Luther King Civil Rights Day in 2000. He later relocated to Crown Point, Indiana where he served as an usher at Eastlake Baptist Church in Merrillville, Indiana and a volunteer at Adam Benjamin Veteran's Hospital in Crown Point, Indiana.
Those who preceded him in death are his devoted wife of thirty (30) years, Jill Houser-Burns; father, Press Burns, Jr.; mother, Frankie Burns Brown; in-laws, Charlie & Nancy Houser; brother, Charles Burns; sister, Betty Burns-Simon; nephews, Demetrius Burns and Robert Foreman, Jr.; maternal grandparents; Frank and Louella Prudhomme Sanders; paternal grandparents, Louvenia and Press Burns, Sr.
