My mother:

Anna Elizabeth [Merrick] Burton was born 11 June 1922 in Boston, Massachusetts the fifth child. Her siblings: Arthur, Peter [died abt. 1 years old], Marie, and Estella.

1] Her parents: 1st generation Americans. Marie Kirstine Dale [Norwegian + Danish] and John Arthur Merrick [Irish].

Mother: Marie [Kirstine] Dale] Merrick
Birth SEPTEMBER 29, 1889 • Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA
Death 01 DECEMBER 1940 • Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA

Father: John Arthur Merrick
Birth 8 MAY 1888 • Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, USA
Death 13 NOV 1944 • Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA

2] Maternal Grandparents:
Grandfather: Peder Olai Pedersen Dale
Birth 6 FEBRUARY 1860 • Dale, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway
Death 20 MARCH 1931 • Dale, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway

Grandmother: Kirstine Jørgensen
Birth 25 NOVEMBER 1856 • Elmelunde parish, Mønbø Herred, Præstø, Storstrom, Denmark
Møn is an island in Demark
Death 6 AUGUST 1929 • Dale, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway

Kirstine emigrated from Keldby, Møn, Denmark. Kirstine's emigration, 23 October 1879 [age 22], on the Thingvalla Ship to New York with final destination to Chicago. The passenger list:
includes the Nielsen family; two adults and six children. Her father's name: Jørgen Nielsen.
Kirstine was a twin; her brother Niels Peder Jørgensen. According to their family surname patterning four children have the surname of Jørgensen. An elder sister: Sidse Margrethe Jørgensdatter along with an older brother: Peder Jørgensen.

NOTE: Patronymics
Until about 1850 to 1870 most ordinary people used patronymics instead of surnames. Patronymics are constructed from the Christian name of a person's father, followed by "sen" (= son) or "datter" (= daughter). So, for example, Jens Nielsen's daughter Maren's full name would be "Maren Jensdatter", and his son Søren would be "Søren Jensen".

Peder Olai Pedersen Dale emigrated to America, 24 May 1881 [age 21] on the SS Moravia, Allan Line from Norway to Liverpool to New York.

His favorite uncle Ole Kornelius was living Kandiyohi, MN. when he emigrated.
He would have traveled first to Minnesota then on to Chicago. The Pullman Company was beginning to build/expand railway cars, he did work for Pullman [for how long-not known].

Kirstine and Peder married Monday, 11 September 1882.
Together Kirstine and Peder had six children. 1] Dohrens Pedersen Dale [1887-unknown],
2] Marie Kirstine Pedersen Dale [1889-1940], 3] Dorthea Pedersen Dale [1891-1971],
4] Andreas Teodore Pedersen Dale [1893-1925], 5] Dagmar Elinora Pedersen Dale [1896-1910],
and 6] Peder Harald Artur Pedersen Dale [1900-1917].

Dohrens [1887-unknown], probably died as a teenager. Dohrens birth record 9 May 1887 in
Pullman city, Cook County, Illinois. Last record for Dohren: 1900 Census of Norway, Dohren is listed, age 13. The 1910 Census of Norway, does not list Dohren. Not able to find a death record in Cook County, Illinois for Dohrens. The family returned from Boston to Hyde Park, Illinois in late 1920's. Sometime between 1900-1910 is probably when he died in Cook County, Illinois.

My mother Anna remembered a time when she and her mother Marie walked from their home in Hyde Park over to Oak Woods cemetery to locate Dohren's grave site in the cold.
She waited while her mother tried to find Dohrens grave; but she was not able to do so.
No one knew about his burial, no record apparently.

Anna shared many family stories; her mother was a stellar force in their family, she worked and worked many jobs to support her family. Unfortunately, her father John Arthur Merrick took to drink and was not a reliable partner nor father. Grandmother Marie was
the main support of the family, no surprise this is a Norwegian tradition. She worked endlessly
for her family... I want to thank her so much for making this great sacrifice! No wonder my mother was so in awe of her.. STEADFAST!

Uncertain about Dohren's exact death date or why there is no record at Oak Wood cemetery
for his burial. Grandmother Marie was absolutely certain her brother was buried there. Mom recalled she was very sad that she could not locate his grave site. I have called the cemetery
in search of Dohren, but no record. Mom said he died young based upon Grandmother.

Marie Kirstine Pedersen Dale [age 51]
Birth SEPTEMBER 29, 1889 • Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA
Death 01 DECEMBER 1940 • Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA
Grandmother Marie was a talented fashion designer and seamstress as a young woman.
She was living with a Wealthy Chicago family [mom thought it was Wrigley or McCormick,
but after research with both families not able to locate any record for employment].
She did live with a family to design/create clothing for the family. This is before ready-to
wear clothing was mainstream. Grandmother could knit, crotchet, quilt... and was marketable.

She met and married John Arthur Merrick [he was an enlisted military [in the cavalry] many
soldiers traveled or were stationed in Chicago during 1910's. She moved to Burlington, VT
where John Arthur Merrick was stationed, they married 10 October 1914.

They had five children; 1] Arthur Vernon Merrick [1915-1961], 2] Peter Merrick [1917-1918],
3] Marie Lorraine Merrick [1918-2006], 4] Estella Geraldine Merrick [1919-2002],

The US 1930 Census she is a waitress in a Chicago Tea Room. Dorthea [, age 39] married Frank Joseph Juban [Hungarian divorcee], 10 January 1931, both living in the Chicago land area. She is mentioned in her sister Marie's obituary. She died 15 June 1971 [age 79].

Andreas Teodore Pedersen Dale [age 31]
Birth NOVEMBER 1, 1893 • Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA
Death MAY 12, 1925 • Dale, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway
Andreas was living in Dale, Norway with the family about 1910. Grandmother Marie chose
not to travel with the family to live in Dale, and apparently Aunt Dorthea did not.
1910 Census of Norway lists Andreas at age 17 and is listed as a farmer and died 12 May 1925, buried on 16 May 1925 in Dale, Norway [per Norwegian records].
