Anne Morris Stuart Richardson died peacefully at her home in Gloucester, Va., on Feb. 11, 2021. She was 90 years old.
Mrs. Richardson was the widow of retired U.S. Army Col. Philip S. Richardson, Jr. She had long been active in the altar guild at Abingdon Episcopal Church, Gloucester, and in the King’s Daughters (benefactors of the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters).
An avid bridge player, Mrs. Richardson belonged to the 642 duplicate bridge club in Gloucester for many years, and she played social bridge with other groups. She also played the piano and had a lovely singing voice. When she was younger, she performed at recitals and sang in several Episcopal church choirs.
Born in Winston-Salem, N.C., Mrs. Richardson grew up in Rosedale, Va., and Saltville, Va., where she loved to ride horses on the Stuart family farms. She majored in English and minored in voice at Mary Baldwin College in Staunton. There, she met her future husband, a cadet at Virginia Military Institute. They married in Saltville in June 1952, just after her graduation.
Mrs. Richardson traveled extensively. As the wife of an Army officer, she lived in Tokyo, Japan; Fort Knox, Ky.; Fort Leavenworth, Kan.; Saltville; Charlottesville, Va., Falls Church, Va.; Aldbury, England; Erlangen, West Germany; Stuttgart, West Germany; Richmond, Va., and Fort Monroe, Va. In 1974, the family moved to their permanent home on the York River in Gloucester.
Mrs. Richardson was the daughter of Walter Preston Stuart and Elizabeth Anne Morris Stuart, the great-niece of Virginia Governor Henry C. Stuart, and the great-great niece of James Ewell Brown (J.E.B.) Stuart. She was preceded in death by her brother, Walter Preston Stuart, Jr., of Richmond.
She is survived by her son, Philip Stuart Richardson, of Gloucester; her daughter, Anne Dabney Asplen, and her son-in-law, George H. Asplen, of Church Creek, Md.; her three nephews, Walter Preston Stuart III (Hyesun), of Baltimore, Md., Hugh Beal Stuart (Polly Myers), of Falls Church, and George Blake Asplen (Kristin), of Baltimore; her niece, Jennifer Asplen Little (James), of Baltimore; her five great-nieces, Margaret Page Stuart, of Pittsburgh, Eliza Myers Stuart and Dabney Myers Stuart, both of Falls Church, and Caroline Leigh Asplen and Mary Ellen Bowie Corrigan, both of Baltimore; and four great-nephews, Philip Nielsen Stuart, of Falls Church, and Cole Blake Corrigan, Samuel Grason Asplen, and William Blake Asplen, all of Baltimore; as well as countless friends.
Mrs. Richardson’s ashes will be interred in a private ceremony. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held Saturday, June 26, at Abingdon Episcopal Church. All family and friends are very welcome. Andrews Funeral Home & Crematory, Gloucester, Va. is in charge of arrangements.
