Professional Football Player. For seven seasons (1956 and 1959 to 1964), he played at the quarterback and defensive back positions in the National Football League with the Chicago/St. Louis Cardinals, Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys. Born John Gipson Roach, he attended Highland Park High School in Texas and played collegiate football at Southern Methodist University. Selected by the Chicago Cardinals during the 3rd round of the 1956 NFL Draft, he totaled 64 career regular season games. His career was interrupted for two years (1957 to 1958) while he served with the United States Air Force. In 1960, he produced a career high 1,423 passing yards with 17 touchdowns and led the NFL with a 9.0 touchdown percentage. Roach experienced two world championship seasons with the Green Bay Packers (1962 and 1963) as a backup to Bart Starr. In 1964, he served as a backup for Don Meredith with the Dallas Cowboys. After retiring from football, he worked as an executive for an investment company.
