Actress. Born Elizabeth Marie Christine Kuhnelt, she was believed by some to be a descendant of Austria's Emperor Franz Joseph. She began her acting career with small theater companies, later making her debut on the London stage in "The Storm." Her first film was "London" in 1926, and she continued working in British films until she came to New York to star in "A Farewell to Arms" on Broadway. This led to a film contract with Fox in 1931, and later with MGM in 1936, although she was assigned mostly mediocre roles, most notable among them being "Selma Landis" in "After the Thin Man," opposite Jimmy Stewart and William Powell. Her last movie was "Corregidor" in 1943. Afterwards, she retired from the screen and went on to write six novels. She died of cancer at the age of 43, leaving behind her husband, Curtiss Thomas, and their four year old daughter, Carolyn.
