Richard R. Day
New Prague, MI/Oriskany Falls-Richard R. Day, 85, passed away peacefully on February 1, 2021 with the love and support of his family by his side at Mala Strana Care and Rehabilitation Center, New Prague MI.
Dick was born in Utica on March 23, 1935, the son of the late Royce E. and Marion Long Day. He was raised in Oriskany Falls and graduate from Oriskany Falls High School Class of 1952. He was a proud Army Veteran having served from 1954 to 1956. Following his tour of service, Dick returned to his hometown of Oriskany Falls. He married his childhood sweetheart, Joan E. Faulkner on September 28, 1957, at the Oriskany Falls United Methodist Church. Following the military, Dick had worked for Dapson Plumbing and Heating of Oriskany Falls. In 1962, Dick and Joan became the proprietors of Day's Hardware Store in Oriskany Falls. They raised their children in a village that they loved. They also enjoyed operating their business where they lived, always there to help neighbors and strangers alike, with the service you could only find in a small-town hardware store. In 1979, they closed the store which is now the Village Library. They moved to Sherburne where Dick went to work for the former Chesebrough Ponds Company located in Sherburne. Dick retired from Wyeth in Oriskany Falls in 2011. Living in Sherburne from 1979 to 2011, Dick maintained his memberships and offices in many of Oriskany Falls' Community Civic Groups. They include: Alliance Lodge#1097 F.&A.M., Oriskany Falls Fire Department, Oriskany Falls Kelley Phillips Post #569 American Legion, Sherburne Legion, Hillside Cemetery Board and the Cassidy Hollow Rod and Gun Club. Dick was a certified instructor for Hunter Safety Courses and Firearm Safety Courses. He especially was proud and enjoyed teaching young people the "art" of gun safety. In 2011, Dick and Joan moved to Minnesota to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Together they had many wonderful adventures and family events that enriched the whole family. To know Dick, was to know an honest and humble man, he gave more of himself to others, asking for nothing in return. His family and the community morn his passing.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Joan of New Prague, MI; his daughters, Brenda Day of North Dakota, and Karen (Michael) Tracy of New Prague, MI; his beloved grandchildren: Melissa Shockman, Lindsey Tracy, Matthew Tracy, Madison Brennan and Hunter Brennan. A niece and nephew, as well as several cousins and close friends survived Dick.
Dick is predeceased by his parents Royce and Marion; his sister Shirley Warriner; and his beloved daughter, Amy Louise Day Brennan of Colorado Springs on July 7, 2020.
