He was the son of Alford and Katherine Layton. He married Julia Anne Miller on June 11, 1955. He grew up on raised on the family farm and was a lifelong dairy farmer. He played football in high school and kept up with the Hopkins High School Vikings football team. He enjoyed turkey hunting and playing golf and kept his mind sharp by playing chess. Spending time flying his Piper Colt two-seater airplane was also among his favorite pastimes. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 63 years, Julia; and sisters, Doris Miller Brahlek and Donna Miller. He is survived by his sons, John and Jan Layton, Keith and Janet Layton and Bryan Layton; sister, Dorothy Harrington; thirteen grandchildren and twenty-six great-grandchildren.
