Adult film director, producer, and writer. Real name James Lloyd Mitchell. A native of Antioch, California, he was along with his brother Artie considered a pioneer of the porn industry of the late 1960s through the early 1990s. The Mitchell Brothers became well-known for their pornography, strip club businesses in and around the San Francisco area, and other parts of California, and winning several landmark obscenity cases. They are probably best remembered though for discovering porn star Marilyn Chambers and using her in their 1972 film, "Behind The Green Door." The film which had somewhat of a cult following after it's theatrical release featured Chambers in the role of kidnap victim Gloria Saunders. The film which was made with a budget of $60,000 (and later grossed over 25 million dollars in theater ticket and video sales) was the first hardcore pornographic movie to be widely released in the United States. Among the Mitchell Brother's other films are, "Reckless Claudia" (1971), "Resurrection Of Eve" (1973), "Sodom & Gomorrah" (1975), "The Autobiography of A Flea" (1976), "Never A Tender Moment" (1979), "Beyond De Sade" (1979), and "The Grafenberg Spot" (1985). In 1986, the brothers released a sequel to "Beyond The Green Door", but due to new laws about the actors and actresses having to wear condoms and other protective paraphernalia, the film was a disaster and the Mitchells lost hundreds of thousands of dollars. On February 27, 1991, Jim Mitchell confronted his brother Artie about his longtime drug use and volatile behaviour. An argument broke out and Jim pulled out a rifle and shot his brother to death. Jim Mitchell was arrested and charged with voluntary manslaughter. He was tried and sentenced to six years in prison. He was released from prison in 1997. After his release Mitchell returned to his ranch in Sonoma County, California, and it was their that he died from a heart attack at the age of 53, ten years later. A funeral was held on July 19, 2007, and he was laid to rest beside his brother and parents at the Cherokee Memorial Park in Lodi, California. The Mitchell Brothers were the subjects of the books "X-Rated" (1992), by David McCumber, and "Bottom Feeders: From Free Love To Hard Core" (1993), by John Hubner. The 2000 film, "Rated-X" starring Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez was also based on them.
