He excelled at school and was graduated in 1954. Like many young men of that period he joined the military to carve out a life for himself. He became an airplane mechanic for a short time before leaving the service to pursue other endeavors. By 1966, his journey had led him to New York, and in 1967 he began working at Pilgrim Psychiatric Center as a Mental Health and Therapy Aide.
He enjoyed a long career there that spanned over 30 years, meeting many friends along the way. He was known simply as 'Wallace', and because of his charming and humorous personality, it was a name you heard a lot. He was a hard worker and a well-liked staff member, who was known to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He became a pillar not just for his co-workers but most importantly for his friends and family who counted on him. At 56 years of age he had lived longer than any of the other males in his lineage and enjoyed nearly perfect health for an additional twenty-seven years. He had a great sense of humor and frequently told stories and tall tales, shamelessly flirted with waitresses and loved to play the devil's advocate.
After retirement he maintained a few hobbies, none he loved more than working out in the yard. He spent countless hours manicuring, not only his lawn, but also the lawns of neighbors and friends. He enjoyed longevity and believed his health was tied to his work outdoors.
Other activities included traveling several times a year to be close to his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed spending time with his grands, spoiling them with attention and gifts. Affectionately known as Grandad or Pop-Pop, he was energetic, witty, and still very inquisitive at 83. In trying to figure out today's generation, he always wanted to know "Are these kids for real?". Sadly and unfortunately, he was unable to receive his answer to this and other questions that he constantly asked. On February 5, 2021, while visiting family and friends in Alabama, he passed away due to natural causes. He is
Survived by his eight children: Yolanda Cox (George 'Morrey'), Steven Wallace, Timothy Wallace, Anthony Wallace, Vida Wallace, Kendra Williams (Michael), Harolyn Wallace, and Evita Wallace. In addition, he is survived by several honorary children, a host of nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren, as well as countless friends and neighbors.
