1850 - Robert is shown on the Cleveland Co. NC census with wife Jemima. He was
77 years old, was a farmer, born in NC and owned real estate worth $1800.

The Cleveland Co. records contain a number of Deeds of gift from Robert Wells to
his children & grandchildren. On 9-24-1849 he conveyed to Robert Holloway
Wells, son of Thomas P. Wells, for love & affection, a certain negro boy named
Lawson, aged about 16 years, and to Robert Gidney Wells, a negro boy named
Joseph aged about 11 years, & to Robert E. Gidney, a negro boy named John aged
about 14 years (Cleveland Co. Deeds B533f). On 5-30-1851 he conveyed to
Exixanna Withrow of Rutherford Co, a negro boy named Caleb Wesley aged about 4
years, to Thomas P. Wells of McMinn Co. TN, a negro boy named Andrew Sidney aged
about 10 years & to Cynthis S. Gidney of Cleveland Co. NC a negro boy named
David Richardson, aged about 7 years (Cleveland Co. deeds C276, 281, 282).

His will is dated 6-2-1851. A codicil was added 4-1-1852, and it was probated
at the September Court, 1853 (Cleveland Co. Wills, 1:163-165). Terms of the
will as follows:
1st, after all my just debts & funeral charges are paid, the balance to be
divided as follows:
2nd, unto my beloved wife, a negro man named Jack, also a nego girl named Jane &
a negro girl named Mariah, one wagon & 2 horses, her choice & gearing, on half
of the cattle, hogs & sheep. All the household & kitchen furniture to be
disposed of as she sees proper. Also my home lands, including the York & Wilson
lands, to have during her lifetime. Also a negro man named York, and a negro
girl named Eliza to have her lifetime or widowhood.
3rd, to my son Thomas P. Wells, a negro man named James.
4th, to my son John K. Wells, $200 & my cloths.
5th, unto my daughter Exixanna C. Withrow, a negro man named Dick & his wife Ann
& her youngest child she may have at my death.
6th, unto my daughter Sinthia G. Gidney, a negro man named York & girl Eliza at
my wife's death.
7th, unto my daughter, Rachel H. Roberts, $200 of the proceeds of the home lands
at my wife's death.
8th, to my daughter Isabella P. Torrence, a negro girl named Fanny & $200 of the
sale of the home lands at my wife's death.
9th, unto my grandson Miles W. Roberts, $200 to be left in John K. Wells hands
until he comes of age.
The balance of my land & other property not herin named, shall be sold by my
executors and the balance of the proceeds not herein mentioned, with all the
money & notes that I may have, to be divided between Thomas P. Wells, John K.
Wells & Exixanna C. Withrow & Sinthia S. Gidney. John K. Wells & James Withrow
were named executors & Thoms L. Parker & D.D. Lattimore witnessed the signature.
The codicil rely directed that "my wife Jemima Wells" was to have on years
provision for herself & family and all her stock.
