He enlisted in the Army on February 16, 1943 in Rutland, Vermont. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed building transportation equipment (except automobiles and aircraft), and also as Single, without dependents.

Lester was "Killed In Action" in Italy during the war and was awarded the Purple Heart.
