Joseph "Jodie" Matthews Jr was released from all the pain and suffering that he endured for many year as a long-time dialysis patient on January 22, 2021. He transitioned peacefully while at Chesapeake Regional Hospital and has gained his wings.

He was born October 18, 1956 in Norfolk Virginia to Joseph Matthews Sr. & Susie M Parker. Jodie graduated from Booker T Washington High School in Norfolk VA.

He proudly served his country In the United States Army, as a E5 Platoon Sergeant for 9 years.

After being honorably discharged from the Army, Jodie went on to work for Norfolk Public Schools at James Monroe Elementary as a Part-time Lunchroom Aide.

There after he worked for The City of Norfolk Waste Water Management Department as a maintenance Worker. When his health begin to fail, he retired. Other than faithfully going to dialysis 3 times a week, he found pleasure in listening to his music, watching wildlife and fishing videos, riding out, dining out and fishing.

Jodie was a long time patient at Davita Great bridge in Chesapeake Virginia. He was known for looking out for the other dialysis patients making sure they were being treated appropriately by the staff and the transportation crews. He was such a comical person, always kept everyone laughing. The things that came out of his mouth was so funny. He has left us with so many hilarious memories.

Jodie/Mr. Jodie/Jojo/Joe Chilly/Mr. Matthews was well known in his neighborhood hood. He had his own nicknames for everybody and could tell you which apartment everyone lived in. He was very popular with the kids. He would tell the young boys, “you the man.” Whenever he would see the children outside playing, he would always find some goodies to give them. If you didn’t know him, just to look at his facial expressions, you would think he was the meanest person in the world. He was just the opposite... sweet as pie... his wife would often tease him calling him Bean Pie and Beanie. He hated it...lol. Deep down inside she knew he was really blushing. We will truly miss him.

Preceded in death bys his parents, sister, Gay Matthews and brother Troy Matthews.

Survived by his Wife, Deirdra Cherry Matthews; daughters: Echo Matthews and Tiffany Matthews; step-daughters Chyna Johnson, Crystal Johnson and Camryn Johnson; sons: Terrel (Shannon) Matthews, Travis Matthews and Joseph Matthews III; step sons: Kordaryl Johnson, Kourtney Johnson and Keion Johnson; brother, Craig Matthews; sister, Visa Matthew; special friend, Dana Wilson; 18 grandchildren & a host of adopted children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, family & friends.

Earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot heal. At ease Soldier. Your work here on earth is done.

The Family sends their sincere gratitude to Jodie’s long time friend Dana Wilson, the staff at Davita Great Bridge, Hampton VA Medical Center, Chesapeake Regional Hospital, Atlantic Vein & Vascular, Reliance Medical Transportation, Nightingale’s Home Health, Comfort Care of Chesapeake & all that played a part in his Care throughout the years.

A funeral will be February 9, 2021 at the Fitchett-Mann Funeral Home. A walk through viewing will be February 8, 2021. Seating is limited. Contact the family if you wish to attend. Masks are required.
