Funeral services for John Henry Tanner, Jr., 88, Athens have been scheduled for 10:30 A.M. Friday February 26, 2021 at Autry’s Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Tony Romans and Rev. Jeff Godwin officiating. Burial to follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park, Athens. Mr. Tanner passed away February 17,2021 in Athens. He was born May 19, 1932 in Tyler to the late John Henry Tanner, Sr and Bertie Irene Bass Tanner. John, or “Buddy”, as called by his family, grew up around Athens. He frequently traveled around South Texas and Old Mexico with his parents during the depression, farming. He served in the Army from 1952 to 1954 during the Korean War. He was stationed in California and was trained as an Anti-Aircraft Gunner. Then he worked in Colorado for a time as a fruit and vegetable inspector. In 1955 he married Mary Joe Aaron. They had three children and lived around Athens their entire married life, building several houses in the area. John worked as the Parts Manager for Kinabrew-McGuffey Chevolet for 20 years, then retired from Eaton Motor Company serving as Parts Manager for 10 years. He had a life long love of old Chevy trucks and cars, guns, knives, wood working and good food.

John is preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 60 years, son Lee Aaron Tanner, sister Edith Isenblitter, and, son-in-law Joe G. McGuffey. He is survived by daughter; Trish McGuffey and husband Ron Adcock, son; Steve Tanner and wife Katie, daughter-in-law; Tina Tanner, grandchildren; John Coleman McGuffey, Molly McGuffey and Trace McGuffey; Casey Tanner and wife Melanie, Kindle Tanner; Andy Tanner and wife Kristine, Matthew Tanner and wife Shelby, David Tanner and wife Sarah. Great grandchildren; Colton Nix, Hunter McGuffey, Baylee Tanner, Kenadee Tanner, Case Tanner, James Tanner, Kate Tanner, Henry Tanner and Jackson Tanner. Sister, Sarah Baggett, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers are John McGuffey, Andy Tanner, Matthew Tanner, David Tanner, Casey Tanner and Kenneth Baggett.

Honorary Pallbearers are Larry Thomas, Bill Flowers, Don Andrews, Martin Stockard, Trace McGuffey, David Bellew.
