The Right Reverend Walter Coggin, O.S.B., PhD (1916 - 1999) was a Benedictine monk, teacher, mentor, prefect, chaplain, coach of the College football team, Chairman of the Philosophy Department, President of Belmont Abbey College, Chancellor of Belmont Abbey College, and the Abbot of Belmont Abbey Monastery.

Abbot Walter entered the Belmont Abbey Monastery in 1936. He was ordained priest of the Order of Saint Benedict on June 19, 1943. He became President of the college in 1956. Father Walter was elected the Third Abbot Nullius of Mary Help of Christian Abbey (and its eight county "diocese") on November 25, 1959, succeeding Abbot Vincent Taylor, OSB.

Abbot Walter cherished teaching and loved his students, and students in return loved him. Students from around the world and from several generations benefited greatly from his teaching as well as from his fatherly and caring advice and help.

Abbot Walter was a gentle monk who possessed many virtues which Saint Benedict emphasized. He personified love, humility, stability, obedience, and prayer. He was dearly loved by the faculty, administration and his brother monks. As an Abbot Bishop, Abbot Walter was a Father of the Second Vatican Council, 1962 - 1965.

Abbot Walter resigned as abbot in 1970 and returned to teaching in the college's Philosophy Department, succeeded as Abbot Nullius by Father Edmund McCaffrey, OSB. Abbott Emeritus Walter died on December 28, 1999, at Belmont Abbey monastery and following the funeral Mass was buried in the Abbey Cemetery.
