Charles J. Cooper, 94, a resident of rural Cumberland, passed away Monday afternoon at the Miller Retirement Home in Atlantic where he had resided since December of 1983.
The son of Charles Edward and Clara Marie Leonard Cooper, he was born August 19, 1890 in Adams County, Iowa and was married to Ethel Jones on May 29, 1936. He grew up in the Grant and Cumberland areas and in his early years he worked as a farm hand and later as a caterpillar tractor operator helping to build roads. He served with the Army during World War I and for many years he mined coal in the Carbon and Briscoe areas before retiring on an acreage southwest of Cumberland.
He is survived by his wife, who resides at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Anita; a sister, Lillie Cooper of the Atlantic Care Center; three brothers, Jess Cooper of Oshkosh, Nebraska, Walt Cooper of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, and Ben Cooper of Hemingford, Nebraska; a nephew, Vergal Sothman of Griswold; three nieces, Leona Johnson of Atlantic, Mrs. Orval (Clara) Sunderman of Griswold and Darlene Petersen of Cumberland; and other nieces and nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Esther Sothman and Hazel Marie as a small child; and five brothers, Robert, Harry, Fred, Frank and Jay Cooper.
Interment will be the Field of Glory at the Atlantic Cemetery.

He like to hunt and trap. He always had a soda
pop for the kids.
