Arthur Francis Evans
September 23, 1940 - January 29, 2021

Col. (Ret) Arthur Francis Evans, 80 years old, passed away Friday, January 29, 2021 at home in Garden Ridge, Texas.

Art was born in The Bronx, New York, on September 23, 1940 to Margaret (Gleason) and Arthur Christian Evans.

Art graduated from Archbishop Stepinac High School, in White Plains, NY, in 1958. He earned a BS in Mathematics at Manhattan College in 1962, and MBA from Fordham University 1972, graduated from Air War College in 1978, and received his teaching certificate from Texas State University in 1991.

Jean Desnoyers and Art Evans married in June 1962 and served in the Air Force for 29 years. After Officer Training School in San Antonio, they began their international journey and lived in several countries including Azores Islands, England, Spain, throughout the Mediterranean, Vietnam, and eventually to Randolph AFB in San Antonio, where he retired on August 1, 1991.

After humbly accepting many awards and achievements including the Bronze Star for his outstanding service in Vietnam and the Legion of Merit for outstanding service throughout his entire service in the Air Force, he retired and pursued his passion for teaching math at Texas Military Institute in San Antonio from 1994-2005. In addition to teaching, he served as Upper School Head 2004-2005, as well as faculty advisor to the Honor Council.

Art was an active athlete for all of his life. Throughout his Air Force career, he competed in basketball, tennis, golf, and racquetball. During his time at TMI, he coached the tennis and basketball teams. His love for racquetball led him to compete in the Senior Olympics. An accomplished and hardworking player, he finished 2nd in the state of Texas in 2014 in both singles and doubles and qualified for the National Senior Olympics. At the National Senior Olympics in 2015 at Minneapolis, at the age of 75, he placed in the top four singles and 2nd place in doubles nation-wide in his five-year age group.

After the Lord called their spouses home, Johnida Huggins and Art Evans married on November 25, 2000. Sharing the same enthusiasm for traveling and adventure, they created beautiful memories all over the world. Exploring waterfalls and gardens, reading with scenic views, capturing breathtaking photos, and enjoying new experiences led to a wonderful marriage of 20 years.

When he wasn't traveling, you could typically find him in his nook with a book, on the racquetball court, or at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, where he taught RCIA, sang in the choir, and served in the Military Ministry, which he and others founded 10 years ago.

Art is preceded in death by his first wife, Jean, and his parents, Arthur C. & Margaret (Gleason) Evans. He is survived by his wife, Johnida; son, David A. Evans of San Antonio; daughter Margaret Anne Hall of Louisville, Colorado; granddaughter Isabella Reggler; sister-in law Anne (Frank) Hurley; step-sister Gerry McDonald; step-son Scott (Carla) Huggins; step-daughter Melissa (David) Poling; step-son Craig (Banner) Huggins; grandchildren Ryan, Paige, Jeremy Huggins, Travis and Tyler Poling; Cole & Cody Mack Huggins; and extended family.
