Thomas Ross "Ross" Mellor, OBE, J.P.
Ross was an active figure in his community for nearly a century. Born in Tallangatta, he began his working life as a teacher before moving on to bigger things. Ross was the Mayor of Swan Hill in 1960, and was instrumental in developing the Swan Hill Pioneer Settlement. He was also a member of the Murray Valley Development League, the Habitat Trust, the Victorian Council of the Arts and many other councils and organisations. In later life he established his own consultancy firm. Recently, until his sudden death at age 94, he had been working to get Swan Hill Pioneer Settlement heritage-listed which would prevent the local council from building a $10 million art gallery in the middle of the precinct and preserve the region's history. This work is being continued tirelessly by his wife Anna. Ross' hard work, enthusiasm and nigh-prophetic vision took him from relatively humble beginnings as a state school teacher to a man with decades of experience in tourism, regional development, and economic geography. His days as a teacher never really ended however; his sage advice and words of wisdom will leave their mark on family, friends and peers for generations to come.
Cremated at Bunurong Memorial Park on 24 Feb 2021.
