Newton County News, August 13, 1948:
'Eslie Collins, 22, was injured fatally when he was hit in the right temple with a baseball at Lurton Saturday.
Young Collins was batting when he was hit. He ran his base and pitched during the next inning. He had a sudden severe pain in his head, and was taken to Dr. Blackwood's office at Deer. Dr. Blackwood sent him on to Harrison. He died at the Kirby hospital at Harrison about 30 minutes after he arrived there at about 8 p.m.
Eslie was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Collins of Ben Hur. The Ben Hur team was playing the Lurton team.
Aside from his parents he is survived by 3 sisters, 8 brothers and a number of other relatives in Newton county. Harry and Don Johnson of Jasper are second cousins.
Funeral services were held at More at 3 p.m. Tuesday with Rev. Albert Lynch in charge.'
