PLEASANTON - Wayne Wilson, 80, formerly of Childress, died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008, in San Antonio.

Services will be at 4 p.m. today in Carey Baptist Church in Carey with the Rev. Randy Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Carey Cemetery by Johnson Funeral Home.

Herbert Wayne Wilson was born Sept. 26, 1927, in Childress to Joseph "Jodie" Herbert and Claudia Mae Toon Wilson. He was married to Bettye Maurine Arnold on May 25, 1947. She preceded him in death on April 8, 2005, after 58 years of marriage. He was the proud and beloved "Granddad" to 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Wayne worked in bridge construction for 33 years before moving to Colorado, where he farmed for years before he and Bettye retired to the Rio Grande Valley. In recent years they had moved to Pleasanton.

Wayne was an accomplished woodworker. He built many items which will become family heirlooms. He was most proud of the gate he built for the Carey Cemetery in 2007.

He also was preceded in death by a daughter, Sheri Jane Wilson Rankin; his parents; two brothers, James Troy Wilson and William Leon Wilson; and a sister, Melinda Nadine Wilson.

Survivors include two daughters, Kay Smith and husband Ron of Pleasanton and Teresa Garcia and husband Fred of Alamosa, Colo.; two sons, Rob Rankin and wife Cindy of Burleson and Thomas Wilson and wife Beth of Abilene; a brother, Joe Wilson of Vernon; three sisters, Evelyn Hester and Melba Helm, both of Childress, and Maxine Cole of Fredericksburg; and a sister-in-law, Wanda Arnold of Lubbock.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to Carey Cemetery Association, in care of Dwayne McKee, 606 Ave. G S.E., Childress, TX 79201.
