Opera Singer. A well-respected recitalist, and teacher, she performed for many years and reached international stardom, especially through her performances and recordings as 'Brunnhilde' in Wagner's Ring Cycle. She sang throughout Europe and in the United States, appearing at the Metropolitan in New York City, San Francisco, and Seattle. In the early 1980s, she moved to Australia and performed there for many seasons as well. She wrote an autobiography “Wait Till the Sun Shines, Nellie” in 1986 (Nellie was her middle name). Her professional career lasted from the mid 1950s through the mid 1990s, ending only due to the health of her husband of 34 years, opera tenor John Darnley Thomas. After his death in 1994, she took over managing his Singing Academy in Sydney.
