A 19-year old laborer living with his widowed mother and his four siblings in 1860, Sgt. Columbus K. Gilmore was Quartermaster for Snow's Battery B 1st MD Light Artillery serving from 7 Sept. 1861 until 3 July 1865, though official military records show his enlistment only until 1864 letters home indicate otherwise. He helped recruit men to the battery and was responsible for requisitioning items for the battery. He was recognized for his work in requisitioning by a promotion to Quartermaster. When the LAC Gerry GAR Post was chartered in Port Deposit in 1899 Gilmore was a charter member and officer of the organization, then living in Port Deposit. He later moved to Wilmington, Del., where he died in 1902.
