Musician, Songwriter and Composer. Born in Philadelphia, he was raised by parents who sang gospel, encouraging his singing there as well. His song "I Could Never Repay your Love," caught the attention of a music producer and it was recorded by the musical group, The Spinners. Joining up with two other writers, Joseph Jefferson and Charles Simmons, he began to write additional songs, penning three number one hits for the group. Dionne Warwick had a hit with "Then Came You," in addition to songs for The Temptations and Major Harris. Hawes did solo work for Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, The Three Degrees, Melba Moore, Phyllis Hyman and many others. His music has been covered by many artists, such as Mary J. Blige, Jay-Z, Todd Rundgren, James Taylor, Johnny Mathis and has been sampled by many hip-hop artists. He also recorded his own work, served as producer and providence guidance to many new artists. In 2013, he published an autobiography "Growing Up in the Sound of Philadelphia."
