Debra Lynn McKenzie
August 2, 1955 - February 10, 2021
Freeland, Washington - Debra Lynn McKenzie passed away peacefully on February 10th after a courageous 5 ½ year battle with ovarian cancer. Debbie was born in Kennewick, Washington on August 2, 1955 to Bill & Jean Graham. She attended Western Washington University where she met the love of her life, Kip McKenzie. After graduating from the University of Washington, they married in August of 1977. Debbie spent time working in advertising, and later developed a love for travel during her work as a travel agent. She moved to Mercer Island with her husband Kip to start a family in 1986. Once Kyle & Shannon were born, she devoted her life to raising a family. She created a welcoming home where her warmth and acceptance touched everyone in her presence. Debbie became an accomplished gardener, master chef, world traveler, incredible mother and wife, and knew how to throw one hell of a party. After the birth of her second child, Shannon, Debbie began a 21year career with the Mercer Island School District. Debbie & Kip sold their home on Mercer Island in 2006 and built their dream home on Whidbey Island.
In August 2015 Debbie was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer. Not letting her diagnosis dictate her life, Debbie took on the moniker of "Warrior Princess". She lived her final years bigger than ever, raising tens of thousands of dollars for Rivkin Foundation, a cancer research institute, and traveling the world between chemo treatments. When she wasn't traveling, she spent time volunteering at College Place Elementary where her daughter teaches. In her final years, she inspired many around her with her grace, determination, and strength. She is survived by her husband of 43 years Kip McKenzie, son Kyle McKenzie, daughter Shannon Clay, parents Bill & Jean Graham, sister JoLynda Chronister, brothers David Graham and Brian Graham. We would also like to thank all the family and friends who have supported Debbie through her final journey and a special thanks to Dr. Hank Kaplan, Dr. Fentging Yan, and the entire staff at the Swedish Cancer Institute for their care and compassion. She will be missed, but her legacy will never be forgotten. In lieu of flowers, please send remembrances to the Rivkin Center for Ovarian Cancer.
