BELLINGHAM - Joseph F. Spas, 85, of Bellingham died peacefully, with his family by his side, Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2007.

He was the husband of Helen R. (Pichie) Spas, who died in 1984.

Born in Woonsocket, R.I., the son of the late Daniel and Anna (Dyprey) Spas, he was a lifelong resident of Bellingham and a graduate of Bellingham High School.

Mr. Spas worked for New England Telephone and Bell Atlantic for 35 years as a line supervisor, retiring in 1981.

He was very active in Bellingham, having served 12 years on the Bellingham School Committee, six years as chairman. He served 21 years on the Board of Selectman, six years as chairman, and was a member of the Bellingham Finance Committee. He was a member and past president of the Polish American Club of Bellingham and a member of the Third Order of Dominicans. He was a communicant of St. Theresa Church, Blackstone, and the former Assumption Church of Bellingham. He was a member of the Assumption Church Choir and League of the Sacred Heart.

Mr. Spas was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran and received the Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal, American Area Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal.

He leaves his sons, Dennis Spas of Woonsocket, R.I., Daniel Spas and his wife, Beverly, David Spas and Joseph Spas, all of Bellingham, John Spas and his wife, Liz, of Cumberland, R.I.; and a daughter, Linda Herard of Wickford, R.I.; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Stella Pollitt of Woonsocket, R.I.

He was also brother of the late Alexander, Walter and Stanley Spas and Johanna Deffley.

The funeral will be held Monday, Oct. 22, at 9 a.m., from Cartier's Funeral Home, 151 South Main St., Rte. 126, Bellingham, with a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m., in St. Theresa Church, 630 Rathbun St., Blackstone.

Burial will be in St. Jean Baptiste Cemetery, Bellingham.

Calling hours will be Sunday, Oct. 21, from 3 to 7 p.m.
