James Buckner Barry was born in Laught, Laois, Ireland, the son of James Bryan Barry and Mary Buckner. He married Mary Magadalen Noble in 1756 in Wilkes, North Carolina. They had nine children in 22 years. He died in March 1788 in Carteret, North Carolina.

James Buckner Barry Will:
Jan. 7, 1788 Proved March Court 1788 In the name of God Amen, I James Bery of Carteret County being very sick in body but in perfect mind and being mindfull of mortality and of my family . . . I give unto my well beloved wife Mary Magdalene Bery my negroes Jon, Linder, Lusy, and my horse called Tiger and horse called Blase, and two yoke of oxen, my' cows and calves and all my Plantation tools and furniture. I give to my son David a negro called Sam and one bed and one horse and two cows and calves that he has already received I have already given my daughter Nancy Fields one negro girl named Grace, one horse, two cows and calves and one feather bed and furniture and a linen wheel. I give to my daughter Rachel Jones a negro girl named Tillie, two cows and calves, one horse, one bed and furniture, one iron pot and some puter and two sows and pigs. He gives the same to his daughter Feraba Gibson, son James Bery and to son Mark Bery. To daughter Hannah Bery, and Mary Magdalene Berry the same.
