Thomas Eaton was the son of William Eaton d. 1759 and Mary Rives who moved from Prince George county, VA to Bute County NC about the time he was born. Thomas owned land at Eaton's Ferry on the Roanoke in the eastern part of Bute County. Eaton was a Revolutionary patriot and served as a Colonel and Brigadier General of the Bute County NC/eastern half later Warren County militia/regiments during the War of the Regulation in 1771 and the Revolutionary War from 1775-1784. He was also a member of the North Carolina Provincial Congress, North Carolina House of Commons, and the North Carolina Council of State under Governor Richard Caswell.
A famous story involved Thomas Eaton at the battle of Brier Creek. Eaton apparently had a distinctive boot because he had small feet. His boots were lost at the Battle of Brier Creek and came into the possession of Tory leader Colonel John Hamilton. Hamilton returned the boots at a dinner party at the home of Willie Jones in Halifax, NC many years later. Eaton threw the boots back across the table at Hamilton!!
