Martha was born and grew up on Belview, the family farm near Columbus, NJ. Her parents were Walter Lewis Reeder and Edith Sykes Gibbs. She attended the George School in Newtown, PA, and Earlham College in Richmond, IN. A lifelong member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers,) she was a member of Crosswicks Monthly Meeting. She taught for many years in the Camden and Philadelphia public schools.
