Cynthia Lanell Givens was born on May 29, 1960 to Shirley Givens and James Green.
She unexpectedly departed this life on October 22, 2020.
In 1980 her only child Mercedes was born.
One of her greatest joys was becoming a grandmother. She loved her grandchildren and they loved “Gigi”. They were always in her prayers and in her heart. There is nothing like a grandchild to put a smile on your face, joy in your soul and deep love in your heart.
Cynthia graduated from Central High School in 1979. She attended Kansas City College of Medical and Dental, where she earned a Medical Assistant Certificate there in 1992, then she taught classes there as well. How she loved teaching and the interaction with students.
She later enrolled at Kansas City Kansas Community College and served as a student ambassador helping to recruit students and assisting with enrollment. Cynthia completed her Associate Degree in Addiction Counseling in May 2001 and a Certificate in Supervision in May 2002.
Cynthia then attended Friends University and earned her Bachelor’s degree in 2005.
Cynthia Givens was a member of Kansas City Purpose and Destiny. She attended her fourteen-week appointment with God and graduated in 2013. She was an active member of the ministry and loved supporting others by sowing seeds into future students.
Cynthia was a friendly person and never met a stranger. Always giving of herself, she started working as a nanny and caregiver in the early 90’s. She took care of many children, some whom she remained in contact with. She was Nana to Megan Sterchi-Lammert from 5 weeks old and always remained close to her into adulthood and motherhood.
She was Cindy to the family. Spending the rest of her life taking care of her mother and sister. There is nothing she would not do for them. It wasn’t always easy, but she did it. She would struggle, but she would never quit. For this the family will always be grateful for all she has done.
Her sudden departure from this life has been overwhelming, she was so caring and loving to her mother and sister. Mercedes said it best “It wasn’t supposed to end like this, 60 is too young, but I’m grateful for the years we did have you here.”
She leaves to cherish her love and memories: her mother Shirley Givens, her sister Iley Givens, her son Mercedes Givens (Shayne), her grandchildren Samone (Taylor), Eden and Bentley; aunts Veda Givens, Pam Dowe and Virginia “Juanita” Council, along with many uncles and cousins, as well as her best friends Theresa Holliday, Angela Williams-Crane, Jannifer McDaniel-Roby and Lorenzo.
She was preceded in death by her father James Green, grandparents Addie Banks, Vernice Givens, Herschel and Beatrice Givens, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
She was an encourager and could make you laugh even when you were feeling your lowest. She was born a caregiver. With her as a friend, you did not have to face your problems alone. One of the best gifts you can give someone is thanking them for being part of your life. For the life, spirit and love of Cynthia Givens, we are forever grateful.
Arrangements are pending.
