Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Nativity Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday at Hoffmann-Schneider Funeral Home, 1640 Main St.
Mr. Chapman was employed at John Deere Dubuque Tractor Works for 30 years as a machinist.
He was born on Feb. 27, 1933, in Dubuque, son of Merrill and Myrtle (Thelien) Chapman. He married Erma Yager on July 18, 1953.
He served in the Army and was honorably discharged as a private 1st class.
Gene was a passionate stock car fan and 25-year veteran driver. His involvement in racing spanned 45 years as a mechanic and engine builder.
He will be sadly missed by his feline companion, Stormy.
Surviving are his wife, Erma, of Dubuque; three sons, Gene Chapman II, Gary Chapman and Greg (Pamela) Chapman, all of Dubuque; a daughter, Cheri (fiance, Russell Masartis) Kass, of Dubuque; six grandchildren; a great-grandchild; two brothers, Ralph (Dorothy) Chapman, of East Dubuque, Ill., and Richard Chapman, of Dubuque; and a sister, Audrey Yarnall, of Dubuque.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Betty Evans and Jeanette Mills.
