Born on October 17, 1927 in Johnston, RI, he was the son of the late George L. and Edna (White) Porter .
Howard had the proud distinction of having served in four branches of the United States Armed Forces. First, in the Army Air Corp in WWII, the US Air Force during the Korean War, on "loan" to the Navy as a meteorologist and then to the Marines to assist in removing unexploded ordnance. Thirty seven years later, he became a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary where he served for 20 years.
Howard was a Commercial Products Salesman for RCA for over 30 years and earned many trips throughout the world for his sales accomplishments. He was also a community member of the Restoration Advisory Board for Naval Station Newport. Howard had a passion for gardening and was a true Rhode Islander who needed to be near the water. He enjoyed many years of boating and several more with amazing views of the East Passage from his deck.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his children, Susan Kuchman and husband Stephen of Bristol, CT, Mark and his companion Karen Barrett of Burlington, VT, Beth Ann Keeffe and her husband Richard of Saunderstown, RI and Patricia Turner and her husband Thomas of Warwick, RI. In addition, he is survived by his grandchildren Patrick, Molly and Griffin Keeffe along with several nieces and nephews. Howard was predeceased by his brothers George, Norman, Arthur and Earl Porter and sister's Marian Duffy, Hazel Egan and Dorothy Johnson.
His funeral was held on Friday, November 6th from the Connors Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Lucy's Catholic Church, 909 W. Main Rd., Middletown, RI. Burial was in St. Columba Cemetery Brown's Lane in Middletown.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to St. Lucy's Building Fund, 909 West Main Road, Middletown, RI 02842.
