John S. Robbins
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of John S. Robbins, 74, of Panama City. He died January 6, 2021 from complications of COVID-19.
John was born on September 28, 1946 in Andalusia, Alabama and became a Christian at a young age. He moved to Panama City in 1963, and was a member of the first graduating class of Rutherford High School in 1964. After graduating high school, John was hired by Southern Bell Telephone Company as a linesman's helper. In 1964, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve and was honorably discharged after serving 7 years. In September, 1967, John and his wife, Gail, were married at Callaway United Methodist Church. John and Gail's son, Jason, was born in 1975.
He was promoted to management in 1970 and held positions in Panama City, Pensacola, Jacksonville and Gainesville. In 1984, BellSouth assigned John to Panama City as Division Manager. John was promoted to Regional Corporate and External Affairs Manager in 1990, where he served until retiring in May 2000, after 35 years of service. After retiring, John founded BAYSOLUTIONS, a firm specializing in governmental relations and public affairs.
John was involved with many community organizations, including: Bay County Chamber of Commerce, Bay County Board of County Commissioners, Bay County League of Cities, Bay County Military Affairs Committee, Bay Defense Alliance, Bay Economic Development Alliance, Florida State University Panama City, Habitat for Humanity of Bay County, Junior Achievement of Bay County, Panama City Port Authority, Rotary Club of Panama City, Salvation Army, Telephone Pioneers of America, and United Way of Northwest Florida.
Although he was a dedicated community leader, his priorities were faith, family, and friends. He loved Sunday morning worship, back porch sunrises, watching football, his dog Fifi, and spending time with family. He was 'Pop' to his three grandchildren, whom he loved immeasurably. Together they made many special memories.
John was preceded in death by his mother and father, Ethel and Riley Robbins, sister Glenda Howell, brother George Robbins, twin brother Joe Robbins and father-in-law James Ward.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years Gail Robbins, son Jason Robbins and wife JoBeth, grandchildren Anna Grace, Sara Kate and Hampton Robbins, brother Bob Robbins and wife Sandy, sister Rebecca Johnson, mother-in-law Ruthel Ward and brother-in-law Jimmy D. Ward.
He is also survived by numerous family and friends that he loved very much.
Due to COVID-19, a private family service will be held. A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to Habitat for Humanity of Bay County, PO Box 408, Panama City, Florida 32402-0408 or habitatbay.org/donate-now.
