Nancy was the daughter of Robert Smith and Sarah Y. Clemmons and the wife of Richard Hightower. Richard's place of death, when given, is usually stated as having been in Williamson County, TN where he resided. In his recollections of Tennessee written in 1883, Memucan Hunt Howard wrote: "Out of the numerous persons engaged in the business I was engaged in one death only occured in thie (the) wood, and that one Mr. Richard Hightower, father-in-law of the late O. B. Hays Esq. of Nashville, Mr. Hightower died in 1820 I believe at a fine spring a few miles South of Covington Tipton County-known afterward & now I presume- as Hightower Spring."

I visited the Hightower Cemetery in 1998. I noted the inscription but no dates although they are very clear in the topmost photo taken by a volunteer. Oddly, in most family trees, Nancy's year of death is found given as 1819 but that cannot be correct. She petitioned for dower rights in 1822, was present in court in 1832 during litigation concerning property and her will was written Jan. 28, 1846 and presented in court in the August session of 1849. In a letter from Huntsville (dated June 21st - no year but believed to have been 1849) written by Nancy's granddaughter, Laura Hayes, to her brother, Oliver, Laura wrote: "I was very sorry to hear of the death of Grand Ma, but it was an event I long expected, she was getting so old and infirm. I suppose Cousin Sarah stays there now. Uncle Richard will be compelled to marry in self defense he will be so lonely, and no one now to take care of his little children." Laura could only have been referring to her Grandmother Hightower as her paternal grandmother had died in 1825. Laura herself was not born until 1829 - 10 years after the 1819 that is so often found given in error as Nancy's year of death.
