Charlotte Wood Horton
SEPTEMBER 29, 1927 – FEBRUARY 2, 2018

Charlotte Anne Wood Horton was born on the 29th of September 1927, in Houston, Texas, where she resided her entire life. She passed away in Houston on Friday, the 2nd of February 2018, at the age of 90. Charlotte was the daughter of Bernice DeYoe Wood and Herschel James Wood, both native Houstonians as well. She was proud of her Houston heritage, and loved to reminisce about earlier times in our city.

Charlotte attended River Oaks Elementary School (where in first grade, many lifelong friendships were forged), Lanier, and Lamar High School. At age 16, Charlotte enrolled at Sophie Newcomb College. She later transferred to the University of Texas where she majored in Fine Arts and was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma.

Painting was a lifetime love, and Charlotte continued to paint until her last days. She also enjoyed flower arranging and was a member of River Oaks Garden Club for 51 years. She was a member of The Junior League of Houston and Houston Country Club. She attended First Presbyterian Church. Charlotte and her husband George cherished their time together, especially their world travels and summers at their home on the Oregon coast.

Charlotte was preceded in death by her dear parents, Bernice and Herschel Wood, and her husband George Frederick Horton. She is survived by her son Steven Calder Ewing and his partner Steven Buss, and her daughter Kelty Ewing Crain and her husband Rogers L. Crain. She also leaves behind her three beloved grandsons Rogers L. Crain, Jr., Alexander Calder Crain and his wife, Betty, and Lawson McKay Crain, as well as her brother, Herschel James Wood, Jr., his wife, Nancy, and their children, Mark, Wendy and Sallie.

The family would like to thank Margarita Dominguez for her many years of friendship, love and dedicated service.

Friends are cordially invited to gather with the family and share remembrances of Charlotte from five o’clock in the afternoon until seven o’clock in the evening on Tuesday, the 6th of February, in the grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.

A memorial service will be held at half-past ten o’clock in the morning on Wednesday, the 7th of February, in the Community Center of the Hallmark, 4718 Hallmark Drive in Houston.

Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception at a venue to be announced during the service.

At a later date, the family will gather for a private interment at Glenwood Cemetery in Houston.

In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions may be directed toward the River Oaks Garden Club Forum of Civics Foundation, 2503 Westheimer Road, Houston, TX 77098; Camp for All, 10500 Northwest Freeway, Suite 220, Houston, TX 77092; or Bering Spiritual Support Network, 1440 Harold Street, Houston, TX 77006.
