Elam Sinclair Templeton was the third of six known children of Oni Sinclair Templeton (1806-1888) and Emily Boone Templeton (1810-1850), who married c1832 at Duck River, Hickman County, Tennessee and moved to Cape Girardeau County, Missouri shortly after that.

Elam was a 1st Sergeant for Company B29 Missouri Infantry for the Union Forces during the Civil War. He was reportedly in Sherman's March to the Sea.

Elam first married to Emily (Emma) Nugent (1845-1878 (or 1879?)) on 16 Nov 1866 at Cape Girardeau County, Missouri. Emily was the daughter of John Hutchinson Nugent (b. 17 Nov 1812 in PA; d. 11 Apr 1883) and Ruth Eccles (Echols?) Nugent (b. 06 Apr 1813 in VA or PA; d. 31 Jun 1864), who married on 10 Jul 1833. The Eccles lived a few houses away from Elam's parents at the time of the 1860 census. It is not known where John and Ruth are buried. Elam and Emily were the parents of five known children, namely:

1. Emily Ruth Templeton (1867-1868)
2. Arthur Gray Templeton (1868-1951)
3. Henry B. (Bern? Buster? Brein? Byrne?) Templeton (1871-p1900)
4. Clarence Oni Templeton (1873-1944)
5. Dwight Moody Templeton (1875-1955)

After Emily died, Elam remarried to Maria (Mariah?) Josephine Caldwell (1851-1917) on 22 Apr 1880 at Shawnee, Cape Girardeau County, Missouri. Elam and Maria were the parents of three known children, plus one adopted child, namely:

6. Ira Templeton (1881-1884)
7. Walter Templeton (1883-1961)
8. Emily Ruth Templeton (1886-1895)
9. Lena Hart Templeton (1896-???)

Were there really two Emily Ruth Templeton's? In 1900 Maria said she was mother of 3, one living and Lena Hart, listed as "bound" was living with them. In 1910 Maria said she was the mother of 7, 2 living with Lena listed as a Templeton and listed as adopted.
