WINONA JAZZ GREAT DARDANELLE HADLEY DIES IN MEMPHIS HOSPITAL

Jazz legend Dardanelle Hadley, of Winona, died this past weekend at Baptist Memorial Hospital Central in Memphis, as a result of of complications from a July 3 heart valve replacement surgery she had in Oxford.

Services for the 79 year old pianist and vibraphonist were held Sunday at Moore Memorial United Methodist Church in Winona She was buried in Winona Garden of Memory. Rev. David Carroll officiated the service.

Tony Franks offered a musical tribute to Dardanelle during the service.

Dardanelle was born in Avalon on December 27, 1917. Her given name was Marcia Marie Mullen. She learned to play piano from her father Buck Mullen and then developed those early teachings into the marvelous gift she displayed throughout her stellar career.

She graduated from Louisiana State University as a bassoon Major but later switched to the piano where she began to make a name for herself as a jazz pianist and vocalist. She performed all over the country as a professional jazz musician, from Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York City. She performed with the greats as Nat King Cole, Paul Edenfield, Tal Farlow, and Art Tatum. She eventually signed a record contract with RCA Victor and Columbia.

Dardanelle was the featured attraction at the Copacabana Nightclub in New York City in the mid 1940's, and was a staff pianist for WGN-TV in Chicago in the 1960's.

She also starred as "Aunt Dodie" on a popular children's program and played a major role in the radio soap opera "Ma Perkins."

Dardanelle served as an artist in residence at Ole Miss from 1986 to 1988 while continuing to perform.

Her last performance was at the Confederate Memorial Building in Greenwood on May 22.

Public Radio Mississippi began in 1995 airing spots entitled, "Dardanelle's Vignettes," which are musical anecdotes telling the story of Dardanelle's life growing up in Carroll County and Greenwood. The series contains 22 spots and has been a great success according to PRM management. PRM is currently planning to air a tribute to Dardanelle in the near future.

Dardanelle was preceded in death by her husband Walter Byron Hadley II in 1986 and her son Skip Hadley in 1979.

She is survived by her son Brian Hadley of Winona, and grandsons Beckett Hadley of Winona, and Erik Hadley of Clearwater, Florida.

Bert Mitchell, Jack Marshall, Jan Bailey, Bruce Branch, Danny Havens, and Jamie Hudson, all of Winona, served as pallbearers at the Sunday service.
