Negros Island was the third largest of the Admiralty Island and a prime location for an airfield. The assault by US forces began on March 3, 1944. Delbert Williams was a part of the 1st Division of the 12th Cavalry which landed on March 6. The 12th Cavalry was assigned to take Papitalai Village which was the site of a former mission. During heavy fighting on March 7, 1944 was killed in action. His brother said that he was killed by sniper fire.
Some of his brothers also served in the army in WW2. His younger brother DM served on the front lines in Korea.
