Governor. A native of Camden, South Carolina, he served with the United States Army during the War of 1812. He was elected Governor of Mississippi, serving from 1857 to 1859. He also served as a Democrat to represent Mississippi's 3rd District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1849 to 1851.
