Ellen “Ella” McQuillan Thompson, 97, passed peacefully at home on Saturday, February 13, 2021.

Ella was born Jan 3, 1924 in Amsterdam NY to Mary & William McQuillan. She was raised in Amsterdam and graduated from Wilbur H. Lynch High School in 1941. After attending the Amsterdam School of Commerce, Ella was employed at Mohawk Carpet Mills where she met the love of her life, Carson. They were married on June 7, 1947 at Second Presbyterian Church.



She was predeceased by her parents; her two brothers, Sam and Cecil McQuillan; her son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Diane Thompson; as well as by her son-in-law, Vern Blanchard Jr.



Ella is survived by her husband of 73 years, Carson; three of her four children: Nancy (Dave) Runyon, Patti Blanchard and Jim (Linda) Thompson; seven grandchildren: Jon Passero, Erin (Sean) Gallagher, Vern (Samantha Johnson) Blanchard III, Nicole (Rob Rosenberger) Runyon, Katie (Steve) Palumbo, Alan Thompson and Jon Thompson; as well as by one great-granddaughter, Chloe Thompson.



Ella’s favorite hobbies included spending time with her family, golfing, volunteering at church, and sewing. She was an active member of the Amsterdam Municipal Golf Course, where she ran the Monday night couple’s league. In the past, Ella was a Deacon at the Second Presbyterian Church, and served on the Board of Directors at the Sarah J. Sanford Home for Women. In recent years, her favorite activity was going for rides in the car, looking at all of the local scenery, and ending the outing at Friendly’s with a hot fudge sundae.



Due to the Covid-19 concerns, funeral services will be held privately,and at the convenience of the family.



In lieu of flowers contributions in memory of Ellen can be made to the United Presbyterian Church, 25 Church St, Amsterdam NY 12010 or to the charity of your choice.
