Maggie Jewel Hickman Steele was born August 16, 1929, to Stacie Hickman and Alberta Bourrage Hickman in New Hope Community in DeKalb, Kemper County, Mississippi.
Her father would later move to the Mississippi Delta and he changed his name to Ezell "Zeke" Robinson.
During her youth, she became a member of the New Hope United Methodist Church in DeKalb, MS. While at New Hope, she served as a Communion Stewardess and in the choir.
All of Maggie Jewel's formal education took place in the Kemper County School System in DeKalb, MS, where she attended New Hope School, Hampton Quarters School, and was a graduate of Whisenton High School.
She married Senious Effie Lee Steele, the son of Will Steele and Lucy Rush Steele, who was also a native of DeKalb, Kemper County, MS. Six children, all daughters, were born to their union.
She was a hard working woman. She worked as a farmer, a bus driver with the Friends of Children of Mississippi, Inc. with the DeKalb Center for many years, and in the Dietary Department at Benchmark Nursing Home in Marion, MS.
She died February 15, 2021 , at the age of 91.
