Mrs. JoAnne Lawson Sloan McKinney, age 81 of Weston Valley Dr., Moore, widow of Henry McKinney, passed away Sunday, February 14, 2021 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. McKinney was born in the Mt. Lebanon community of Union Co., December 31, 1939, a daughter of the late Harold and Docia Sherbert Lawson. She was a graduate of Union High School and received her Master’s in Education from Winthrop College. Mrs. McKinney was a retired teacher having taught at Jonesville High School, Union Vocational School and Woodruff High School. After retirement she continued to teach at the Union Adult Education and at Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte after relocating there with her husband.

Mrs. McKinney was of the Baptist faith and had been active at West Springs Baptist, First Baptist of Union, and Mt. Lebanon Baptist where she had served as a pianist and youth director. After moving to the Moore area, she frequently attended Reidville Road United Methodist Church with her daughter. Mrs. McKinney was first married to the late George Sloan.

Surviving are a daughter, Lynn S. Billings and husband Randy of Duncan; a sister, Brenda Billings of the Mt. Lebanon community; six grandchildren, Jordan Palshan, Chase Palshan and wife Kayla, Carlen Palshan, Alyssa Billings, Rhett Billings and Deanna Billings; and four great-grandchildren, Coraline Palshan, Brayden Cothran, Colten Sherman and Brantley Miller.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, February 18, 2021 at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church Ministry Center conducted by Rev. Melvin Shelton, Rev. James Goudelock, Rev. Dr. James Billings and Rev. Joey Shetley. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 until 2:00 PM Thursday at the Ministry Center prior to the services.

Active pallbearers will be David Sloan, Jeff Wood, Kevin Sloan and Kyle Sloan. Memorials may be made to Reidville Road United Methodist Church, 5575 Reidville Road, Moore, SC 29369.
